Why curves cost what they cost
On a flat wall, a straight edge tells you the truth. On a curve, nothing does — the plasterer's eye and a template are the whole quality control, and every pass has to be worked as the material pulls in rather than ruled off in one go.
So a curved wall or a stair soffit takes several times as long per square metre as a flat wall, and it is worked in sections. That is not a mark-up, it is the job.
Spiral stairs and stair soffits
The underside of a spiral or winding staircase is one of the hardest surfaces in domestic plastering: it curves in two directions at once, it is overhead, and there is nowhere flat to stand.
It is done in stages, working the curve up as it goes off, and it will not be rushed. The pictures on this page are Jetnor's — the same staircase part-way through and finished.

Recesses, arches and the modern feature wall
The commonest feature job now is a formed recess for a wall-mounted television, with the cabling chased and boxed so nothing is visible. It is done at frame stage, which means knowing the exact dimensions of the unit before boarding.
Arches, curved bulkheads over an island, radiused corners and formed niches all work the same way: get the substrate right and the plaster is the easy part.

Curved & Feature Plastering: common questions
Can you plaster a curved wall?
Yes. It is formed on a frame or floated to a template and worked in passes. It takes considerably longer than flat wall of the same area.
Can you plaster the underside of a spiral staircase?
Yes — there are photos of one on this page, part-way through and finished. It is some of the slowest work in the trade.
Can you form a recess for a TV?
Yes, and it needs doing at the framing stage. Bring the exact dimensions of the unit and where you want the cables to come out.
Do you do arches?
Yes, formed and beaded with flexible bead. Standard radius or to a template you like.
What about polished or Venetian plaster?
Ask him what you have in mind. It is a specialist finish with its own materials and its own timescale, and it should be quoted as one.
Why is feature work so much dearer per metre?
Because time per square metre is several times higher, it cannot be rushed, and it is worked by eye rather than off a rule.
Can you match an existing curve or moulding?
Often, with a template taken off the original. Send photographs first.
How long does a curved element take?
Far more variable than flat work — a curved bulkhead might be a day, a full spiral stair soffit considerably more. It gets quoted on its own.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day.
