Plasterer in Llanishen and Thornhill
Bay-fronted inter-war semis at one end, big post-war and modern estates at the other, and two very different plastering jobs as a result.
Two eras of housing in one suburb
The older Llanishen streets are inter-war and immediately post-war — cavity brick, bay windows, and wet-plastered walls with a backing coat behind them. Thornhill and the estates north of it are much later, largely dry lined, and behave completely differently under a trowel.
On the older stock the question is usually whether a wall takes a skim or needs floating out first, because sixty years of patching and papering leaves walls that are smooth but nowhere near flat. On the newer stock it is nearly always a straight over-skim.
Knocking through, and what it leaves behind
The standing job in the inter-war stock here is opening up: two reception rooms into one, or the wall between kitchen and dining room coming out. What is left afterwards is a steel beam, a bulkhead to case in, two half-walls that do not quite line up, and a floor level that changes across the opening.
That is plastering work rather than building work, and it is where a room either reads as one space or reads as two rooms with a hole between them. The beam gets cased and boarded square, the bulkhead is set out to a line rather than to the old ceiling, and the junction between the original plaster and the new gets scrimmed properly so it does not crack along the seam next winter.
Rendering on the exposed elevations
The higher ground towards Thornhill catches weather. Render here earns its keep, and the details that matter are the unglamorous ones: a bell-cast bead at the base so water is thrown clear, stop beads at every reveal, and render finished above the damp course rather than run down to the ground.

Our 1930s walls look smooth but they are nowhere near flat. Skim, or float first?
That is the standing question on the older Llanishen streets, and it is decided at the wall with a straightedge rather than over the phone. Decades of papering and patching leave a surface that feels fine and reads badly under a light. If the wall is out by a few millimetres a skim will follow it; floating out first costs a day or so more and gets you a flat wall.
We are knocking through. When does the plasterer come?
After the opening is formed, the beam is in and signed off, and any first fix is done. Jetnor squares up the reveals, beads the new angles and skims the made-good areas into the existing wall. Worth a quick call before the builder starts so the sequence is agreed rather than assumed.
Is it worth rendering the gable that faces the weather?
On the exposed elevations around Llanishen and up towards Thornhill it often is, especially where the brickwork is soft or has been painted with something that will not let it dry. The right answer depends on what the wall is made of, which is a look rather than a guess.
Artex ceiling. Over-board it, or take it off?
Both are done. Over-boarding is cleaner and quicker and loses very little height. Taking it off is messier and, on ceilings of that age, is work that should be treated as potentially containing asbestos until it has been tested. Jetnor will not scrape an unknown ceiling on the assumption that it is fine.

All three, plus Rhiwbina, Heath and Birchgrove. Thornhill and the newer estates are mostly dry lined and behave differently under the trowel to the inter-war stock lower down, so it is worth saying which end you are at when you ring.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day. We would highly recommend Jetnor if you need any plastering done. You will not be disappointed. 10 out of 10 from us.
