Terraces, and what happened to them since
Riverside is Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing running back from the Taff embankment: solid walls, bay fronts, high ceilings, and original cornice in the rooms nobody has got to yet.

Low-level damp, and being straight about it
These streets sit low and close to the river. Ground floors here get more than their share of blown plaster at skirting level, and the cause is almost always one of three things: a bridged or failed damp course, ground levels raised outside above the internal floor, or a solid wall that has been sealed in with the wrong plaster and paint.

The house was split into flats years ago and it is a mess. Where do you start?
With what is actually holding what up. Stud walls put in during a conversion are often not fixed to much, and ceilings that were cut about for services have been patched by several people. It gets set out and made square first, then boarded and skimmed, because skimming over a mess gives you a smooth mess.
It is a flat above a shop. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but it has to be planned. Shared stairs, a shared entrance and a business trading underneath decide how materials come in, how waste goes out and what hours are reasonable. Say what the access is when you ring and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on the morning.
Half our cornice survived the conversion and half did not. Now what?
That is the normal state of a house that has been flats. The surviving runs set the profile, so they are cleaned back and kept, and the gaps are filled to match what is already in the room. What does not work is buying a length of something modern off the shelf and running it alongside Victorian work, because the two sit differently and the eye finds the join immediately. Plaster over Kitchen Artex Ceiling
Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day. We would highly recommend Jetnor if you need any plastering done. You will not be disappointed. 10 out of 10 from us.
