Lofts: slopes, collars and roof-window reveals
A loft room is mostly angles. Sloping ceilings into flat collars, cheek walls, the awkward junction where the dormer meets the slope, and the reveals around every roof window.
Those reveals are worth doing properly. The conventional detail splays them — head horizontal, cill vertical — which throws far more daylight into the room than a square-cut reveal, and it is the difference between a loft that feels like a room and one that feels like a loft.
Getting the stairs and the access right
The stairwell is normally the hardest part of a loft to board and skim, because it is a full-height void with no floor to stand on. It wants planning before boards start going up, not solving on the day.
The same applies to getting materials up there at all. It is not glamorous but it is a real part of the programme and it belongs in the quote rather than in a surprise.

Garages: it is a cold, damp box until it is lined
A garage conversion is a different problem to a loft. The walls are often single skin or unlined block, the floor is lower than the house, and the whole thing has spent thirty years being cold and damp.
So it gets lined out over insulation on a new frame rather than plastered directly, the floor usually gets built up and screeded, and the junction where the old garage door opening was infilled needs care because that is where cracks show up later.

When in a loft conversion do you plaster?
After the structure, insulation, first-fix electrics and plumbing and the roof windows are all in, and before second fix, flooring and decorating.
Do sloping ceilings crack more?
They move more than flat ones, so joints get staggered and scrimmed properly and angles get beaded. Done right they behave.
Why splay the roof-window reveals?
Head horizontal and cill vertical throws far more daylight into the room than a square reveal. It is the standard detail and it makes a visible difference.
Can you plaster a garage wall directly?
Rarely a good idea. Single-skin or unlined block wants lining out over insulation on a frame, or you get a cold wall that runs with condensation.
How long does a loft room take to plaster?
A typical dormer loft with a stairwell is around a week to board and skim, depending on size and access.
Do you work alongside the builder?
Yes, that is normal on conversions. It is easier if the programme dates are agreed between everyone up front.
What about the old garage door opening?
The infill panel is the classic place for a crack to appear later. It needs proper tying in and, on the inside, a lined and scrimmed junction.
Can you do the screed as well?
Yes — garage floors usually need building up and screeding. Worth doing at the same time so the drying happens while everything else is going on.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day. We would highly recommend Jetnor if you need any plastering done. You will not be disappointed. 10 out of 10 from us.
