Plasterer in Ely and Caerau
One of the biggest interwar estates in the country, and most of its original roughcast has now done its ninety years.
Ninety-year-old render, doing what it does at ninety
Ely and Caerau were laid out between the wars on a garden-suburb plan: wide avenues, long runs of semis and short terraces, cavity walls, and roughcast or render over most of them from new.
A sand and cement finish of that age cracks, loses its key and lets water behind it. Once water is behind, frost does the rest, and it comes off in sheets. Painting over it buys a season. Taking it back to a sound background and putting a modern system on is the job that actually ends it.
Strip or overcoat, and how that gets decided
Sound render can be worked over. Blown, hollow or cracked render cannot, and the way to tell is to tap it rather than look at it. A wall that sounds hollow over large areas is going to come off whatever goes on top.
It is a walk round with a hand on the wall, and it is the difference between a job that lasts and a job that looks right for eighteen months. On a run of semis where the neighbours are watching the scaffold go up, that matters.
Inside the same houses
Ceilings, over-skims, making good after a rewire, and boarding out where a garage or a back room has been converted. The rooms are a good size for the era, which makes a full room re-skim a sensible day's work rather than a fight.
What he is asked for most in Ely
Every one of these is priced after a look at the walls.

The original roughcast is coming off in sheets. What now?
That is what a sand and cement finish does at this age once water has got behind it and frost has had a winter with it. The job is to take off everything that has let go, make the background good, and re-render with a system that will move with the wall rather than fight it. Patching a wall that is failing generally is a holding measure, not a repair.
Can you do just the front, or does it have to be the whole house?
You can do one elevation, and plenty of people do the one that takes the weather. Be aware that new work next to ninety-year-old weathered render will show, especially on a semi where the party line runs down the middle. He will tell you how obvious it is likely to be before you decide rather than after.
How do you tell which render is sound?
By tapping it, over the whole elevation, not by looking at it. Sound render rings. Blown render sounds hollow and drums. It is a walk round with a hand on the wall, it takes a few minutes, and it is the single thing that decides whether the job is an overcoat or a strip.
Is a coloured render better than painting it afterwards?
For a wall that takes weather, a through-coloured system means there is no paint film to blow or flake, which is the usual reason painted render starts looking tired quickly. It only works if it goes on a properly prepared background, so the preparation is where the money should go first.
Do you cover Caerau, Michaelston and Culverhouse Cross?
Yes, along with Fairwater, Canton, Grangetown, Danescourt and Llandaff.
What customers say

I would highly recommend Jetnor. He was super quick to respond, and explained what was a very tricky job working around all the existing bathroom and kitchen. The standard of work is fantastic and like a glass finish! Jetnor left the place the as clean and tidy as possible and generally is a great guy! Any job around Cardiff I would highly recommend him! Any future job I would come to him first.
Jetnor's work is fantastic. Punctual polite man. Gave us a great quote. Was able to start quickly. Would definitely use again and recommend. If I could rate him higher I would.
Jetnor responds quickly to requests, gives fair quotes and keeps his commitments, being punctual, hard working and providing quality work. Thoroughly recommend
Quality service. Clean, tidy, polite and very responsive. Lovely hardworking guys, highly recommended.
I cannot rate Jetnor and his team highly enough - they have just finished work on our rendering this afternoon and have done a brilliant job. The work was completed within the agreed timeframe and they have done a brilliant job. All rubbish was taken away after each day and they cleaned up well after themselves. Jetnor was very responsive to my questions and his quote was very competitive compared to others received. I will definitely use Jetnor again and will recommend them to all my friends and family.

Minor skimming job to repair blown plaster
Jetnor was very responsive with information and quality of work was very good. We thought that it may be difficult to get a plastererer for a small job but Jetnor was keen and even came out on a Sunday. A very pleasant man, he was courteous and hard-working. We have now agreed a much larger package of work with Jetnor and look forward to using his services again. Good job!
