Skim, or float and set — they are not the same job
Nearly every plastering call in Cardiff is one of three things. An over-skim, where sound old plaster is keyed, sealed and given a fresh finish coat. A float and set, where the wall gets built back out with a backing coat first because it is bowed, patched or has been hacked off. Or a repair — one wall after a chimney breast comes out, one ceiling after a leak, the reveals after new windows go in.
The difference matters to the price and to the result. A skim is two to three millimetres of finish. It follows whatever it is put onto. If a wall is 15mm out across its length, a skim gives you a beautifully smooth wall that is still 15mm out, and you will notice it every evening when a lamp throws light across it.
Cardiff houses, and why the age of yours changes the price
The city is a patchwork. Solid-wall Victorian terraces through Roath, Cathays, Canton and Grangetown, often with original lime plaster and forty years of assorted repairs on top. Inter-war semis out through Llanishen, Rhiwbina and Whitchurch. Newer estate houses at Pontprennau and Thornhill where the walls are dot-and-dab board.
Each of those wants handling differently. Blown lime plaster sounds hollow under a knuckle and has to come off; skimming over it just buys a year before the patch drops. Old brick, dense block, existing gypsum and fresh plasterboard all pull water out of new plaster at different rates, which is what suction control is for. Get that wrong and you get crazing on one wall and a perfect finish on the next one.

What the room looks like while he is in it
Floors get sheeted and taped and anything left in the room gets covered before a bag is opened. Water and waste go outside — plaster sets in a kitchen waste trap just as happily as it does on a wall.
A single room is usually a day to prep and a day to skim, with ceilings adding time. You are told which days before he starts. If it slips you hear it from Jetnor, rather than working it out from an empty driveway.

Plastering & Skimming: common questions
How much does it cost to plaster a room in Cardiff?
It depends on whether the walls take a skim or need floating out first, and whether the ceiling is in. That is why Jetnor comes and looks rather than pricing it on the phone — the same size room can be two very different jobs.
How long does a room take?
Typically a day of prep and a day of plastering for one room. Ceilings, cornices and hacking off add time. He tells you the days before he starts.
Can you skim over wallpaper?
No. It has to come off. Paper behind fresh plaster lifts as the plaster pulls the moisture through it, and takes the new finish with it.
How long before I can paint it?
Wait until the whole wall has gone a uniform pale colour with no dark patches — usually days to a few weeks depending on thickness, season and ventilation. Then a watered-down mist coat first, never full-strength emulsion straight on.
Do I have to move out?
Not for one or two rooms. It is dusty during hack-off and wet for a day or two after, so a room at a time is easier to live around than a whole floor at once.
Will the new plaster crack?
Hairline crazing usually means suction or timing went wrong; structural cracking means something is moving behind it. Both are avoidable. Scrim on joints and beads on angles deal with the common ones.
Can you patch rather than do the whole wall?
Yes, and often it is the sensible answer after a rewire or a leak. It will never be completely invisible under a raking light, which is worth knowing before you choose patch over full wall.
Do you do small jobs?
Yes — one ceiling, one wall, a set of reveals. Ring and ask.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day.
