Check the conservation area first
Llandaff is one of Cardiff's 27 conservation areas and has its own published council character appraisal. Its controls were extended in December 2020 to take in The Avenue and the eastern end of Fairwater Road.
Inside a conservation area, the normal permitted development route for cladding or rendering a house does not apply, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights for smaller alterations too. If the building is listed, external work needs listed building consent regardless of planning. Worth ten minutes on the council's website before anybody books a scaffold.
Older fabric wants sympathetic materials
Solid walls, lime plaster and soft masonry are common in the older Llandaff stock. A hard cement-rich mix on a soft solid wall does not sit well: it cracks, and it pushes moisture into the masonry rather than letting it out.
That is a conversation to have before the job rather than after, and sometimes the answer is a lime backing rather than sand and cement. Jetnor will say so.
Llandaff North is a different animal
Down the hill the housing is largely late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces, plus inter-war semis — smaller rooms, more solid walls, and the usual crop of blown plaster above skirtings where something outside has been letting water in.
Straightforward work, mostly: full-house skims after a purchase, ceilings, reveals after new windows, and re-plastering after damp has been dealt with.

Llandaff is a conservation area. Does that stop us rendering?
Not automatically, but it does mean checking first. Conservation area status and any Article 4 direction can remove the permitted development rights you would otherwise have for changing the external finish, and a listed building is a separate consent altogether. Cardiff Council holds the conservation area boundaries and appraisals; the Welsh Government guidance covers what normally needs permission. Confirm it with them before anything is booked.
The house is old and the walls are soft. Is modern render the right thing?
Often it is not. Older solid-walled fabric was built to let moisture move through and dry out, and a dense modern system can trap it and push the problem somewhere else. A more permeable finish is usually the sympathetic answer. Which one is a decision made at the wall, after seeing what is actually there.
We are in Llandaff North, not the cathedral end. Is that different?
Completely. Llandaff North is largely terraced and semi-detached stock with the usual internal work — ceilings, re-plasters, making good after windows and rewires — and it is not covered by the same conservation constraints as the older core. Worth saying which side of the river you are on when you ring.
Can you match an existing plaster finish rather than redo the whole room?
Sometimes, and he will tell you when it is not going to work. Patching into an old finish is fine on a small made-good area. Across a whole wall under a picture light, an over-skim of the lot is the only thing that will not show.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day. We would highly recommend Jetnor if you need any plastering done. You will not be disappointed. 10 out of 10 from us.
