Render is a system, and the wall decides which one
Traditional render is a scratch coat that keys into the wall and a top coat that takes the finish. Mixes are chosen for what is behind them: a dense modern block wall and a soft Victorian brick wall want different things, and putting a hard, cement-rich mix onto soft old brick is how you end up with a render that cracks and traps water behind it.
Finish is the last decision, not the first. Float, sponge, or a dry dash thrown on while the top coat is green. Painted or through-coloured. All fine, once the build-up underneath is right for the wall.
The details that decide whether it lasts
Render fails at edges, not in the middle. Water runs down a face and has to be thrown clear at the bottom, which is what a bell-cast bead does. Every termination — around a window, at a soffit, where it meets a different material — needs a stop bead so the arris does not chip and water does not track behind.
Render that goes all the way down to touch the ground wicks moisture straight into the wall. It gets stopped clear, above the damp course. None of this is expensive; it is just the difference between a renderer who is thinking about next winter and one who is thinking about Friday.

Weather, scaffold and the honest programme
South Wales is not a forgiving place to render. Wall exposure to wind-driven rain is graded in zones across the UK and much of Wales sits in the severe and very severe bands. A detail that is fine inland fails on a west-facing gable here.
Practically that means render is not applied into frost, or when freezing weather is expected before it has cured, and a baking south elevation in July gets sheeted so the face does not dry before the body sets. Sometimes it means losing a day. A quote that promises a fixed week in February regardless of forecast is not a quote you want.
How the job runs

Per elevation, with scaffold, waste and any repairs to the substrate listed separately so you can see them.

Old coatings off where they have failed, cracks cut out and filled, beads and stop-ends set out and levelled.
- 4Render
Scratch coat, cured and keyed, then the top coat and the finish, worked elevation by elevation.
- 5Strike and clear
Beads cleaned off, scaffold away, and everything swept up before he goes.

External Rendering: common questions
Do I need planning permission to render my house?
In Wales, usually not — cladding or rendering a house is normally permitted development if the materials are of a similar appearance. But not in a conservation area, and not on a listed building. Cardiff has 27 conservation areas.
How long does rendering a house take?
A rear elevation is often two to three days; a whole house with scaffold is usually one to two weeks depending on size, weather and how much prep the walls need.
Does render stop damp?
It stops driving rain getting into the wall face, which is often the cause. It does nothing for rising damp or a failed damp course, and rendering over an existing damp problem traps it.
Can you render over pebbledash?
Sometimes, if the dash is well bonded and you accept the added thickness and weight. More often taking it off gives a better and longer-lasting result.
What is the difference between render and K-Rend?
K-Rend is a brand of thin-coat silicone render — a base coat with mesh in it and a through-coloured topcoat. Traditional render is sand and cement, and normally wants painting.
Will I need scaffold?
Anything above single-storey, yes. It is in the written quote as its own line so you can see what it costs rather than finding it buried in a rate.
Can you render in winter?
Some of it. Not into frost, and not when freezing weather is expected before the render has cured. He will tell you to wait rather than throw it on and hope.
How long before I can paint new render?
Give it several weeks to carbonate and dry, then use a breathable masonry paint. Sealing wet render in with the wrong paint causes more problems than it solves.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day.
