Solid walls, lime plaster, and why it takes longer
The terraces through Roath, Penylan, Plasnewydd and Adamsdown are mostly solid walled — no cavity — with original lime plaster on the masonry and gypsum patches layered on top over a century.
Blown lime plaster sounds hollow under a knuckle and has to come off. Skimming over it buys you a year at most before the patch drops. And solid walls behave differently to cavity walls where moisture is concerned, which is why a hard, cement-rich repair on a soft old wall often just moves the problem somewhere else.
Damp is the recurring theme
In housing of this age the damp patch above the skirting is rarely the wall's own fault. It is usually a bridged damp course, ground or a path built up outside above it, a leaking gutter or downpipe, or a failed pointing detail letting rain into a solid wall.
Which means the honest answer is often to fix something outside first. Where the plaster is salt-damaged it gets hacked back to masonry and taken up well past the visible tide mark, then re-backed with a salt retardant. There is a whole page on how that works.
Cornices, ceilings and the original details
Plenty of these houses still have their original cornices and ceiling roses, and they are worth protecting. Ceilings often need overboarding rather than over-skimming, which needs care where it meets a run of original coving.

Our walls are solid brick with the original lime plaster. Can you work with that?
Yes, and on the Roath and Penylan terraces it matters. A hard cement-rich backing on a soft solid wall tends to crack off and to hold moisture in rather than let it out. Where a wall needs re-backing, a lime or a more permeable mix is often the right call. That is a conversation at the quote, not an assumption.
There is damp coming through the plaster. Do you deal with the cause?
He does not re-plaster over a live problem and call it done. Plaster is the last thing that happens, after whatever is wetting the wall has been dealt with, whether that is a gutter, a raised path, a failed pointing job or a bridged cavity. He will say which it looks like and what has to happen before he comes back.
Can the original cornice be saved, or is a run missing for good?
Often it can be saved. Where a section has gone, a run can be matched and pieced in, and where it has been buried under paint it may just need carefully cutting back. What is not worth doing is a cheap modern coving next to an original run, because the difference is the first thing anyone sees.
How long before we can paint it?
Fresh plaster goes from dark to a pale even colour as it dries, and how long that takes depends on the thickness, the room and the time of year rather than on a fixed number of days. It wants a thinned mist coat first, not a full coat of ordinary emulsion. Jetnor will tell you what he expects for your rooms before he leaves.
Parking on our street is impossible. Is that a problem?
It is worth mentioning when you ring. Materials have to come off a van and waste has to go back on it, so a resident permit, a space held for the morning, or a rear lane makes the day work properly. It is the kind of thing that is easy to arrange in advance and annoying to discover on the day.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day.
