Set out first, board second
A stud wall that is a centimetre out of plumb is a stud wall that is a centimetre out of plumb forever. Skirting will show it, architrave will show it, and the first person to fit a wardrobe against it will find it.
So the frame gets set out and checked before board goes near it, with noggins where boards meet and where anything heavy is going to be fixed later. Tell him where the TV, the radiator and the wall units are going and the timber goes in for them now rather than being hunted for afterwards.
Dot and dab, and its one weakness
Bonding board directly to masonry is fast and it is how most modern Cardiff estate houses are lined. It is fine, provided the dabs are set out properly and the board is checked for plumb before the adhesive grabs.
Its weakness is fixings — there is a void behind the board, so a heavy TV bracket or a wall-hung basin needs to reach the masonry or land on timber put there for it. Again, worth saying before the boards go on.

Bulkheads, boxing and the awkward bits
Most of the skill in dry lining is in the things that are not flat walls: a bulkhead over kitchen units, a boxed-in soil pipe, a stair soffit, the return into a window reveal, a recess formed for a wall-mounted television.
These are what makes a room look finished or look bodged, and they are where a day extra is worth spending.

What is the difference between dry lining and plastering?
Dry lining is fixing plasterboard to a frame or a wall. Plastering is the finish that goes on top of it. Most jobs are both.
Is dot and dab as good as a plastered wall?
For flatness and speed, yes. The difference is the void behind it, which affects fixings and sound a little.
Can I hang a TV on a stud wall?
Yes, if there is timber behind the bracket. Tell him where it is going before the boards go on and the noggins go in for it.
Do I need special board in a bathroom?
Moisture-resistant board in wet areas, and proper tanking behind tiles in a shower. Standard board in a shower enclosure is a false economy.
Skim or tape and joint?
Skim gives a continuous plaster finish over the whole board. Tape and joint fills just the joints and is quicker. Skim is the better base for paint on a domestic job.
Can you board over an existing wall?
Yes — it is a common fix for a badly bowed or damp-affected wall, and it lets insulation go in behind at the same time.
How long does a stud wall take?
A typical partition is a day to frame and board and a day to skim, plus drying.
Can you form a recess for a TV or a fire?
Yes, and it wants doing at the frame stage. Bring the dimensions of the unit and the cable routes.

Needed kitchen Artex ceiling plastered. Jetnor was quick to respond and arrange a date & time to quote. Quote was very reasonable and job was carried out to an excellent standard (photos attached). He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day.
