K-Rend and silicone thin coat, explained
Thin-coat silicone renders like K-Rend get asked for by name in Cardiff more than anything else. They are a system, not a product — and the parts you never see are the ones that decide whether it lasts.
It is a build-up, not a coating
A thin-coat silicone render is at minimum a base coat, an alkali-resistant reinforcing mesh embedded in it, and a coloured silicone topcoat, usually 1.5mm grain. On insulation it is applied at a nominal 4–6mm and works out around 8–11kg per square metre.
K Rend's own instructions call for 24 hours of curing before anything else goes on top of the base coat. Rushing that is how you get crazing.
The mesh is the whole trick
The mesh stops shrinkage and movement cracks telegraphing through to the finish. It has to be embedded into wet base coat, not laid on afterwards, with sheets overlapped by at least 100mm, and diagonal patches at the corner of every window and door opening.
Those diagonal patches at the openings are the single most-skipped step on a cheap render job, and openings are exactly where the cracks start. If a quote does not mention mesh, ask.
Weather rules
Render is not applied into frost, and not applied when freezing weather is expected before it has cured — NHBC's guidance puts the working floor at 2°C with no frost in the construction. Equally, blazing sun on a south elevation dries the face before the body has set.
In practice that means sheeted scaffold, an eye on the forecast, and being willing to lose a day. A renderer who will start on a wall in February whatever the weather is doing is not doing you a favour.

Silicone or sand and cement?
Silicone thin coat is through-coloured, so it never needs painting; it is water-repellent but breathable, which suits a wall that has to dry outwards; and it is lighter, which matters on insulation. It is also less forgiving to apply and costs more.
Sand and cement is cheaper, tougher against a football, and can be finished as float, sponge or dash. It will want painting, and it will want repainting. Both are the right answer on the right house — the wall decides, not the brochure.
Why exposure matters here
Wall exposure to wind-driven rain in the UK is graded in zones, and much of Wales sits in the severe and very severe bands — zones 3 and 4. It is the reason a detail that is fine in the Midlands fails on a west-facing gable in South Wales.
Practically: proper bell-cast or stop-beads at the base so water gets thrown clear, sealed reveals, and never taking render down to touch the ground.

He turned up on time, was very polite and cleaned up after he finished. He used Blue Grit on the Artex first and plastered when dry the next day.
